O contexto é: Given the known maximum and average speeds for animals of par- ticular body sizes, it is feasible to estimate the range over which they can operate, either on a daily basis or as the distance from a central point such as a nest. In the latter case a “foraging radius” can be assessed (Fig. 3.16). The resultant foraging area is clearly largest for flying animals, and increases with size within each locomotory mode. This will have implications for territory sizes, and for the habitat (and hence diet) quality required by particular species.
