English term or phrase: On the barren Yorkshire moors
I am translating a version of Wuthering Heights for the cinema (from English into Brazilian Portuguese), and I can't find the best translation for: "barren" and "moors", the text is describing the countryside of Northern England, Yorkshire.

This is the text in the beginning of the movie:
"On the barren Yorkshire moors in England, a hundred years ago, stood a house as bleak as the wastes around it."

I looked up "moor" and found as "pântano", but pântano for a Brazilian audience would mean a very wetland, and in this context, how can a wetland be barren, if one of the translations for "barren" is "dry"? I also found "moor", meaning "moorland" as an arid land, and as similar as a "lowland heathland", with difference in altitude between the two. Explanation here:
http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/lowlandheath. "heathland" in Portuguese could be translated as "charneca" in European Portuguese, but honestly, as a Brazilian Portuguese native speaker, I've never heard the word, so am not sure if I could use it in this context.

I am really lost in this one. Any help with be appreciated!
Thanks!

Explanation:
Moorland/moor is a type of habitat, such as the savanna or the Brazilian caatinga, or South America's pampa, consisting of sparse and low vegetation, but not necessarily wet such as a swamp or marsh.

Webster's states that a moor is "a broad area of open land that is not good for farming". Again, nothing to do with swamps.

Barren here could be translated as "estéril" but also as "árido" or "desolado". I personally think that "desolado" is in accordance to the mood of the book.

If you read the PT translation of the book, it says "charneca" over and over, but Houaiss says this word is a Portuguese regionalism, so I think if your target audience is Brazilian, this would sound rather strange and unfamiliar.
