Antes de prosseguirmos, vale a pena lembrar que, independentemente do número de vozes em que uma fuga se desenvolva, o compositor sempre dará uma colher de chá ao pobre ouvinte, limitando-se a duas ou três vozes simultâneas e realçando uma delas. Uma fuga a seis vozes, onde todas tocam simultaneamente e em alto e bom som, seria inaudível.
Toda fuga é baseada em um tema chamado sujeito. Este sujeito geralmente é uma melodia curta e marcante, fácil de ser memorizada. A fuga começa com a apresentação do sujeito em uma das vozes, sem acompanhamento. Feito isso, ele é enunciado pelas vozes restantes, uma após a outra. Imaginemos uma fuga a quatro vozes. A chamada exposição teria o seguinte aspecto:

As reticências indicam que o fluxo musical não pára. Quando uma voz apresenta o sujeito, expõe em seguida outra melodia, geralmente contrastante, denominada contra-sujeito, assim:

Quando uma voz apresenta sujeito e contra-sujeito, ela termina a fase da exposição e passa a se denominar voz livre. Porém, algumas vezes é necessária uma pequena transição:

E a exposição se encerra quando todas as vozes são "livres". Em algumas fugas, há uma reexposição, igual à exposição, mas onde as vozes entram em ordem diferente.
