agree  Sormane Gomes
3 hrs
  -> thanks

agree  Geraldo Quintas: "settled down to" O assentar já está na frase anterior, em Wiemar, nesta frase julgo que a ideia é de dedicação...
4 hrs
  -> obrigado; também fiz essa interpretação

agree  Claudio Mazotti
5 hrs
  -> obrigado

agree  Marcelo Fogaccia: É isso mesmo. Veja o exemplo que o Michaelis dá para "settle down": he settled down to writing / ele pôs-se a escrever. Como disse o António, também acho que o "to" está a mais na frase em inglês. Deveria ser "settle down" e não "settle to down".
13 hrs
  -> obrigado; também me pareceu que o primeiro "to" estaria a mais, mas não tinha toda a certeza.

se assentou dedicando-se a ...

Explanation:
Acho que o que melhor cabe aqui é uma combinação (assentar + dedicar)para refletir o 'settle down to'.

década seguinte assentou, para passar a dedicar-se

Explanation:
Neste contexto "settle to down", assume o sinificado de assentar. Em vez de estar sempre a viajar, estabeleceu-se num local permanente.
