English term or phrase: impart

Computer models of the impact reveal that the collision of Theia and Earth is a glancing blow. It imparts a rotational force to the Earth. This rotation is what gives us our days and nights.

…imprimă Pământului o mişcare de rotaţie
Explanation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_impact_hypothesis
http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Giant_impact_hypothesis
http://www.scientificpsychic.com/etc/timeline/timeline.html

Din câte înţeleg de pe al doilea site, ce-a făcut impactul a fost să accelereze mişcarea de rotaţie pre-existentă: „Whatever original rotation and inclination the proto-Earth had before the impact, after the impact it would have had a day of circa five hours in length”.

- probabilitatea e FOARTE MARE ca Pământul să se fi rotit înainte de impact (dacă adoptăm teoria impactului), fiindcă, “because of angular momentum, it would have taken a very weird kind of physics for the Earth not to have spun”
- the impact definitely had some sort of effect, unless the object hit the Earth bang on, right in the centre
- the duration of the day before the impact is debatable

transmite

Explanation:
transmite Pământului/Terrei o forţă de rotaţie

Aşa înţeleg eu, fără a avea cunoştinţe de specialitate.

imprimă un impuls

Explanation:
Respectivul corp ceresc a imprimat Pământului un impuls. Cel puţin asta deduc din linkurile astea:

o anumită mişcare de rotaţie

Explanation:

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/moon_makin...
The model assumes Earth was not spinning before the impact, though it might have been.
