E o problemă mai degrabă culturală.

Un tip îşi caută tatăl dispărut cu ani în urmă, care fusese urmărit de FBI; în căutările lui ajunge să stea de vorbă cu un agent care îi spune:

“Well, I can’t see how we can help you. The bureau was on the case for a few years but didn’t come up with anything. Then Carter got into office and discouraged us from chasing kooks and suggested we consider crooks instead.”

Varianta mea provizorie:

“Păi nu prea văd cum te-am putea ajuta. FBI-ul s-a ocupat de cazul ăsta timp de câţiva ani, dar n-a reuşit să găsească nimic. Apoi a venit la putere Carter şi a zis că mai bine să alergăm după crooks decât după kooks.”

Cu “kooks” e clar, persoana căutată era cât se poate de ţicnită. Din păcate, nu-mi dau seama cam despre ce fel de "crooks" e vorba. Nu ştiu mare lucru despre politica lui Jimmy Carter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Carter ) în relaţie cu FBI-ul şi nu ştiu nici măcar dacă AR TREBUI să ştiu ceva (cf. relaţiile lui Eisenhower cu FBI-ul, e.g.).

Am I missing something here? Avea Carter vreo ţintă preferată sau pur şi simplu îi spunea FBI-ului să nu mai alerge după cai verzi pe pereţi?

Dupa parerea mea Carter ment: "instead of chasing crazy people chase criminal people".
Nu reusesc sa gasesc o rima buna dar traducerea ar fi "mai bine sa alergam dupa nebuni decat dupa criminali".

Nebuni.. ma refer la escroci...
Deci FBI-ul ar trebui sa se ocupe de lucruri mai "serioase" in timp ce oricum este treaba politiei de a prinde criminalii de zi cu zi...
