The "Red Scare" began in the previous decade and eventually led to thousands of federal employees, especially teachers, losing their posts after being accused of affiliation with the Communist Party. The scare had also resulted in the jailing and blacklisting of "The Hollywood Ten" - ten prominent motion-picture figures who had refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1947.
