This is often considered to be a barren land, devoid of life, where no man wants to live. This is the reason why it is "untouched by man" - it is not "untouched" due to preservation purposes. It is not a beauty spot and not a paradise. If it was a lush expanse of beautiful vegetation, the writer of this English source text would have said "wild countryside" or something similar, and if it was iike paradise, a related word would have been used.
How can you use the word "paradis" here when the Oxford dictionary uses the adjectives "inhospitable", "neglected" and "abandoned" ? See definition here:

In English "Wilderness" always has the connotations of a "lonely" and "empty" place, that is the meaning of the word. My suggestion is obviously incorrect, but this does not call for a manipulation of the sense of "wilderness". English usage of this word is most definitely NOT a place likened to "paradise", quite the opposite in fact!

Indeed, this is not about "pustietate", this is all about the forests of Romania, full of life, of vegetation and animals. As opposed to "pustietatea" they may become if action is not taken against illegal deforestation (the message of our film). Yet, what we need is that one word (two at the most) to name this "wilderness".

Lara - I don't think in this context the word has this "feeling of loneliness, bewilderment and emptiness" meaning. I think you should see the term as defining a landform.

Maybe there are better terms, but I am trying to convey the use of "wilderness" in a literary context. There may be a lack of vegetation, but the tendency of its usage in English it also conveys a feeling of loneliness, bewilderment and emptiness. There can be a lack of usable vegetation in the "wilderness", which is one reason why people would not settle there.

"pustietate" can be a desert, but can also be present in other environments. Does it rain in the desert? ( lasand sute de oameni blocati in pustietate): -

Your post is correct, but "wilderness" also has an emotion attached to it, particularly when it is used in a literate or poetic way. There is a nuance to "wilderness", as I demonstrated in the dictionary definition I posted, which used the word "bewildering". English has many words with these emotive nuances, that are well known amongst those who have read a lot of literature. Dictionary definitions are all very good, but with the usage and emotional connotations of words in a language, you cannot simply turn translation into a mechanical process.

Obviously I cannot translate in this direction, but "a land untouched by man" only contains part of the meaning of the word "Wilderness". This dictionary definition very cleverly encompasses most of the aspects of this word:
"Wilderness
a wild and uncultivated region, as of forest or desert, uninhabited or inhabited only by wild animals; a tract of wasteland."

Other significant descriptions in this same dictionary entry read:

3. any desolate tract, as of open sea.
...
5. A bewildering mass or collection"

Therefore the key words here IMO would be "uncultivated, uninhabited, desolate, bewildering, mass", - the idea of "untouched" is only covered in one or two of these words.
Also, as you will see from the roots of the words, "bewildering" provides the emotional aspect present in "wilderness", and "wild" features all round here. Surely it is this "emotional" aspect that adds to the poetry here?

Poetical or not, I don't think "wilderness" here could not be translated as "sălbaticie" - I think the meaning is "un loc în care natura este (încă)/a rămas neatinsă de om".
