Comportamentul suicidar reprezinta un continuum comportamental care pleaca de la ideatia suicidara, trece prin tentativa de suicid si se incheie cu suicidul fatal.
Ideatia suicidara reprezinta dorinta (exprimata sau nu) a unui individ de a se omori. Tentativa de suicid reprezinta un termen care, in conformitate cu recomandarile facute de expertii Organizatiei Mondiale a Sanatatii, a fost inlocuit in literatura de specialitate cu termenul de parasuicid, care este definit ca „un act nonfatal, prin care un individ intreprinde in mod deliberat un comportament care, fara o interventie exterioara, i-ar cauza moartea sau ca un act care are drept scop obtinerea unor schimbari dorite de catre subiect, prin intermediul unor consecinte fizice reale sau presupuse". Astfel, termenul de parasuicid include atat tentativa de suicid (in vechea sa acceptie, de suicid ratat in urma unei interventii externe), cat si santajul suicidar, eliminandu-se, astfel, din definitii prezenta sau absenta intentiei de a muri, greu de cuantificat in practica.
