Select Fill Materials:
Maximum size of sand and gravel materials being received shall be 50mm diameter particles.
Select fill are composed only of inorganic materials and are free of frozen lumps, trash, or other unsatisfactory materials.

Select Fill is a special material used most often with building pads. Occasionally, it will be used for trench backfill. Select Fill is usually a mix of clay and sand that is dug and tossed to get a consistent mix, so that when worked and compacted, the material will pass required testing for engineer specifications on building pads.

Sprint defines its select fill as any dirt fill material that is being used in an application that has certain specifications required by a soils engineer. Generally, most select fill used underneath concrete foundations or paving must have a low to medium plasticity index (PI) to replace or mitigate highly expansive clays which are common in the Houston area. Most select fill soils are qualified prior to and during placement by the project owner’s soils engineer on a job by job basis by means of sampling the material at the source or at the job site.

Select fill is *superior quality material*, used principally as capping, selected material, structural material and/or verge material and which is specified with a minimum California Bearing Ratio (CBR) value. Select fill materials are commonly specified for use in the construction of:

the earthworks layer immediately beneath the pavement layers
earthworks capping and verge layers
spill-through abutment fills and behind abutment areas of bridge approach embankments
reinforced soil embankments
fill placed adjacent to retaining walls
pipe and culvert backfill.

The maximum stone size for select fill used for roadwork's is 75mm. Select fill is required to be compacted; and when compacted, should be non-permeable (i.e water should not flow through it).
