Не думаю, что речь о "грохнуться". Слишком уж пессимистично.

Скорее, речь о том, что без надлежащего ухода (upkeep) со знанием дела (understanding) шасси на взлетно-посадочной полосе будут скрежетать и портиться так, что последующий ремонт ой как дорого обойдется (или даже "будет не по карману).

Вот пример из автомобильной сферы:

When the needle roller starts to wear it eats it's way into the shaft causing a graunching grinding noise of munched metal from one side of the rear of the car. Often the noise is worse with light cornering. This is an EXPENSIVE NOISE as it invariably means the halfshaft is scrap and must be replaced.

Может не \"скрежет\", конечно, а просто \"шум\". \"Скрежет\" у меня вырвалось именно в отношении шасси. :)
