bread pudding

Russian translation: Why not simply "хлебный пудинг"?

English term or phrase: bread pudding
A dessert made with bread.
Patrick Faucett
Russian translation:Why not simply "хлебный пудинг"?
Explanation:
The word "пудинг" is used quite commonly in Russian. Although in most cases it refers to the traditional English dessert, I believe "хлебный пудинг" will be clear enough even if the text has nothing to do with English traditions.

Бабка (запеканка)

Explanation:
I believe it's a "babka" (probably "zapiekanka"). If it's for Easter - it may even be called "Paskha" (пасха). Word-for-word translation - like "хлебный" for "bread" and "пудинг" for "pudding" does not look right.

neutral  xeni (X): Извините, Владимир, но пасха делается из творога, мука или хлеб туда вообще не входит.Наверное, вы имели в виду кулич?

agree  Dash: Не согласна с Ксенией, все зависит от региона, у нас пасхи делают из дрожжевого сладкого теста. А то, что делается из творога называют бабка или запеканка, как и сказал Владимир

disagree  Olga Judina: Пудинг - это не обязательно запеканка, он может готовиться и на пару, все зависит от рецепта.

_____________

Apple And Pineapple Yogurt Bread Pudding

1-1/2 Cups milk
4 cups bread crumbs
1/2 cup or one 6-ounce container of apple yogurt
1/2 cup or one 6-ounce container of pineapple yogurt
2 eggs
1/4 cup honey
1 teaspoon apple pie spice
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
1 teaspoon butter

I suppose that in Russian it'll be бисквит {bi'skwit}. Бисквит is a sponge-cake (light cake made without shortening).

But frankly speaking, I'm not sure in this definition. So I suppose you'd better name it пуддинг. Word "пуддинг" is the borrowing from English language and it's widely used in Russian.

Explanation:
Коммментарий к ответу Владимира (что такое пасха).

Словарь Даля:

Пасха -
Великорусск. освященная стопочка сыру, творог, коим разгавливаются в сей день; а малорос. кулич, освященный для той же цели, коровай.

Словарь Ушакова:

Пасха -
3. Кушанье из творога, изготовляемое в форме небольшой широкой четырехгранной пирамиды ко дню этого праздника. Творожная пасха.

The bottomline:
if the Asker meant \"bread pudding\" for Easter, it will be КУЛИЧ (kulich), not ПАСХА.
