Вы правильно думаете, но только не "крестик", а "кружочек".

Вы наверное знаете, что индусы ставят себе на лбу точки (рисуют или приклеивают).

Я думаю, что здесь имеется в виду "дорожка" или "полоска" или "кружок" волос, образованный бровями над переносицей, который и напоминает эту "мушку" на лбу.

Из-за этой врожденной отметки на лбу таких людей и считают святыми.

Здесь на картинке вы увидите человека с красной чертой между бровями. Такая раскраска связана с многообразной религией Индии. Понятно, что человек, родившийся с такой полосой на лбу от природы, пусть и \"волосатой\", будет считаться святым.

turf - это дерн. В индийской англоязычной литературе многие слова находят непривычное применение. По поводу круглой формы пучка, о которой здесь прямо ничего не говорится см. ссылку Александра Коносова.

О кружках, точках и полосках


Explanation:
Кружок, который ставят индуисты (не индусы, которые вообще непонятно кто, то ли индуисты, то ли индийцы ;)), называется "тилак" или "тила". Он обозначает кастовую принадлежность и семейное положение.

Однако когда он "от рождения", это действительно супер. :)

И вот что об этом говорят (ссылка 1):

Wisp дает нам "пучок, клок", никакая форма тут не важна, просто это пятнышко выделяется на фоне.

Я посмотрел в словаре санскрита -- urna (диакритики опускаю) это просто "шерсть, ворс, нечто курчавое".
Все тот же "пучок волос". :)

Так что форма не при чем, важно само наличие и то, что она означает. А означает действительно третий глаз.

Поиски Buddha + images + urna дает изрядное число сайтов, которые любопытно изучить. Приводить их не буду, за исключением одной цитаты:

His earlobes are elongated and a dot on his forehead marks the urna (originally _a tuft of hair_), which are considered signs of a superhuman being.

Так что все в порядке и со словом tuft.

Просто "пучок волос". Без уточнения формы.
