Parliamentary gender equality committees in OECD member countries

In the Canadian parliamentary system, special committees are appointed by the House of Commons to carry out specific inquiries, studies or other tasks they deem to be of special importance. In 2016, the House of Commons adopted a motion to strike a special committee on pay equity. The Special Committee on Pay Equity (ESPE) was established with a mandate to conduct hearings on the matter of pay equity and to propose a plan to adopt a proactive federal pay equity. Following extensive consultation with experts from across Canada, the Committee submitted its report to the House of Commons. The report focused on how the pay equity system is currently being implemented within the federal jurisdiction, how the current system can be improved, and how to learn from other jurisdictions to recommend a fairer and more efficient pay equity regime. At the time of drafting this report, the Canadian Government was in the process of responding to the Committee on the recommendations included in their report. A special committee ceases to exist once its final report has been presented to the House.
