war zone vs. warlike zone: from what I understand, they are both quite similar, but warlike zone is closer to "hostile zone" which isn't really a full-out war. An example of war zone is South Ossetia several weeks ago; currently, it is barely bordering on "warlike zone"

Explanation:
warlike имеет значение inclined toward war
соответственно зона военных действий / зона возможных военных действий
второй вариант: зона военных действий / зона боевых действий

Belligerent; hostile.

Of or relating to war; martial.
Indicative of or threatening war.
Having or showing an eagerness to fight: bellicose, belligerent, combative, contentious, hostile, militant, pugnacious, quarrelsome, scrappy, truculent. See attack/defend.
Of, relating to, or inclined toward war

--------------------------------------------------

Второй вариант обусловлен тем (возможно, мое понимание неверно), что warlike zone означает ведение боевых действий (которые еще не доросли до масштабов войны)

FYI

In considering whether a state of war exists, the court will pay
attention to the following factors:-
• Whether there is fighting or conflict between recognisable opposing sides who, have territorial, political or other identifiable objectives, and
• the scale of the conflict and its impact on local public order.
War can include civil war and organised armed rebellion. No formal declaration of war is needed.
‘Warlike operations’ is wider than ‘war’. It may include a build-up of military hardware in a particular area, even though no state of war exists, but the operation must be done in the context of war.

Warlike Operations/Hostilities
The definition of was considered by Mustill J in Spinney’s (1948) Limited v Royal Insurance Co (1980):
“The term “hostilities” refers to acts or operations of war committed by belligerents; it presupposes an existing state of war… There seems no reason to doubt that the [term] applies to acts committed in the course of a civil war; and
perhaps also to an organised armed rebellion…
“Warlike operations” has a wider meaning and includes such operations as belligerents have recourse to in war,
even though no state of war exists… Nevertheless, the acts must be done in the context of a war…”.

Насколько я понимаю, warlike zone is a zone where warlike operations are conducted.

‘Warlike operations’ are military activities where the application of force is authorised to pursue specific military objectives, and there is an expectation of casualties

Судя по этим определениям, это похоже ВОЕННЫЕ ДЕЙСТВИЯ / БОЕВЫЕ ДЕЙСТВИЯ
