English to Russian translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Journalism
English term or phrase:most despicable creature
Выдержка из британской газеты:
Top Tory Patrick Mercer was at the centre of a storm last night after he was taped making a blistering attack on David Cameron. In an astonishing tirade against the PM, the MP branded his boss the worst politician in more than a century and vowed: “We’ll get rid of him.” Former army officer Mr Mercer also declared: “He’s a most despicable creature without any redeeming features.” .... The 55-year-old Tory MP’s comments have horrified the PM’s allies. They could now demand that he is kicked out of the Tory Party at Westminster.
4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Accidental or not, it is still present in the source text and, ideally, should be recreated in the target text, which would be a great challenge. And whether it sounds clownish or spot-on depends solely on the translator's skills. But I agree that rhyming is the last thing we should worry about while translating this text. Here it is much more important for us to get the semantic content of the message right and especially its EFFECT on the receiver. The Russian phrase should carry the same emotional charge as its English counterpart, it should not be any stronger or weaker, but exactly the same or very close. Then we can call it an adequate translation, I think :-)
I'm fairly convinced that the rhyme is quite accidental here. Wouldn't worry about it. Besides, I think that a rhymed Russian translation would sound too clownish to bear! :)
