Я перевожу из финского языка на русский. Финский термин ’varusmies’, что означает ’призывник, военнослужащий срочной службы, солдат действительной военной службы, солдат срочной службы”.

Я хотел бы пользоваться каким-то кратким термином. ’Солдат’ может быть, но они могут быть и офицеры и унтер-офицеры и курсанты разных военных учебных заведений. Предложения!?

Это, наверное, достаточно близко. Требуемая точность зависит от ситуации. Если кто-нибудь чувствует себя не достаточно здоровым, чтобы пойти на работу, хватает диагноз "мне плохо". А для лечения требуется более точное определение болезни.

Использование зависит от контекста. Если нужен короткий термин, который к тому же часто повторяется, лучше выбрать "военный", если позволяет текст (например, это не официальный документ). Учтите так же, что слишком частое употребление в тексте может воспримниматься как тафтология. Тогда можно также использовать "военнослужащий" - более официальный вариант.

Explanation:
No, unless it's war-time, they cannot be officers etc.: "conscript" is by definition and "inductee", the one who was "called" into an activity – in this case the military. Officers are not conscripted. Nor, strictly speaking, may this term apply to sergeants and the like because those are "created" from conscripts in the course of their service. Hence, even stricter speaking, "conscript" may be translated as "новобранец" [“’свеже взятый’“].

“Военнослужащий“ is total nonsense: A Commander-En-Chief of the entire army is also военнослужащий, but to call him a conscript would be a bit wild, don't you think?

"Soldier", on the other hand, is just a different kettle of fish. Unless you want to use it as a general metaphor (but then, again, a general is also a soldier, but certainly not a conscript!). In its more literal sense it wouldn't work because even privates may be called conscripts only in the military systems where draft exists. In the countries with the so-called professional armies, there are soldiers but they are not really conscripts.

Более официально - военнослужащий по призыву (в отличие от военнослужащего по контракту), менее официально - солдат-срочник (в отличие от солдата-контрактника)
Если по контексту речь идет о молодом пополнении, прибывшем в часть, то здесь, разумеется подойдет и призывник, и рекрут. Но к уже прослужившим какое-то время военнослужащим срочной службы, эти термины не совсем подходят.
