I personally have an alter ego who is a mad drummer. I like to explore the technical and frantic part of my personality; it's a hobby of mine. I love the drums, I love experimenting with completely outrageous fills, licks, chops and so-on, but there is just no place for that in commercial music. If I did what I do at a drum clinic at a gig, I would definitely not get the gig. There's an old saying, 'There's no money in jazz'. There's a time for blowing and going crazy on drums, but that has no place in today's contemporary music. There is a place for that in related industries, like the drum industry and on the clinic circuits, and there are some small crossover areas, like in the heavy scene or jazz-fusion where you can blow and play some real high energy, advanced drum parts. But in most styles and areas of the commercial music scene, there's just no room for that, and it's certainly not appreciated by anybody. ***It's not asked for musically speaking,*** and I have absolutely no desire to spill my guts out over something that doesn't need it. The key to playing pop well is to understand what the music is about, and why it has been produced and mastered in a certain way, then go arid reproduce it. At the end of the day you play for people. You have to live up to a certain expectation and play to people that are expecting things a certain way. You bring in pieces of yourself where you can, but just by you being the one who's playing it - humanizing it - you are doing that anyway.

С этим печальным фактом сталкивается в большей или меньшей степени каждый начинающий аккомпаниатор на ударных - я, к примеру, из кожи вон лез, чтобы играть разнообразно и интересно, а меня просили по-проще и по-стабильней... ударных, за иключением определенных стилей и случаев, не должно быть слишком много, поскольку, когда люди слушают поп музыку, перегруженность фактуры ритмического аккомпанимента не вписывается в стиль, мешает восприятию и тревожит ухо слушателя, вместо того, чтобы его ласкать.
