Up to this time the service corps were mostly fife and drum. But now came the U.S. Marine Band adding a drum and bugle corps. It was up to John Philip Sousa himself to write a book of instruction. This was called "Trumpet and Drum" by John Philip Sousa. In this book Mr. Sousa acknowledges as follows: "The author's acknowledgements are due Mr. F.W. Lusby, drum instructor U.S.M.C., for contributions to the work." It was published in 1886. This book became the guide of all ***service musicians*** in all branches and had also a wide civic distribution because it contained all of the drum rudiments.
