It was first performed at the Bowery Amphitheatre in New York in 1843 sung by Dan Emmett. It was first published in written form in a Harvard song book in 1880. The song is thought to be originally a slave song from the south but there is not any particular meaning to the lyrics and the term “Polly Wolly” might be a random name. The song was reinterpreted many times, most famously by Shirley Temple in 1935 in “The Littlest Rebel”. The tune of the song was later used in the 70s for the Boney M hit song “Hooray, Hooray, It’s a Holi-Holiday”. https://allnurseryrhymes.com/polly-wolly-doodle/ "Polly Wolly Doodle" is a traditional American children's song. It was sung by Dan Emmett's Virginia Minstrels, who premiered at New York's Bowery Amphitheatre in February 1843,[1] and is often credited to Emmett (1815–1904).[2][3] It was known to have been performed by the Yale Glee Club in 1878[4] and was first published in a Harvard student songbook in 1880.[citation needed] "Polly Wolly Doodle" appears in the existing manuscript for Laura Ingalls Wilder's These Happy Golden Years (1943) exactly as it is used in the published version.[citation needed] The melody of this song as it is usually sung formed the basis for Boney M.'s hit "Hooray! Hooray! It's a Holi-Holiday" in 1979,[5] and also for Alexandra Burke's song "Start Without You". The tune is also found in children's music, including the Sunday school song "O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E", the German group die Lollipops' "Radio Lollipop", and the Barney & Friends songs "Alphabet Soup" (though only using the first verse's tune) and "If I Had One Wish" (which uses both verses). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polly_Wolly_Doodle -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 час (2021-03-19 23:46:04 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- P.S. Why to translate anything that has no particular meaning? Transliteration, in my view, would do as well. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 час (2021-03-20 00:03:46 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- P.P.S. [4]: Fath’r and I went down to camp, Along with Cap’n Goodin', And there we saw the men and boys As thick as hasty puddin'. CHORUS: Yankee Doodle keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy, Mind the music and the step, And with the girls be handy. And there we saw a thousand men As rich as Squire David, And what they wasted every day, I wish it could be saved. CHORUS The 'lasses they eat it every day, Would keep a house a winter; They have so much, that I’ll be bound, They eat it when they’ve mind ter. CHORUS And there I see a swamping gun Large as a log of maple, Upon a deuced little cart, A load for father’s cattle. CHORUS And every time they shoot it off, It takes a horn of powder, and makes a noise like father’s gun, Only a nation louder. CHORUS I went as nigh to one myself As 'Siah’s inderpinning; And father went as nigh again, I thought the deuce was in him. CHORUS Cousin Simon grew so bold, I thought he would have cocked it; It scared me so I shrinked it off And hung by father’s pocket. CHORUS And Cap’n Davis had a gun, He kind of clapt his hand on’t And stuck a crooked stabbing iron Upon the little end on’t CHORUS And there I see a pumpkin shell As big as mother’s bason, And every time they touched it off They scampered like the nation. CHORUS I see a little barrel too, The heads were made of leather; They knocked on it with little clubs And called the folks together. CHORUS And there was Cap’n Washington, And gentle folks about him; They say he’s grown so 'tarnal proud He will not ride without em'. CHORUS He got him on his meeting clothes, Upon a slapping stallion; He sat the world along in rows, In hundreds and in millions. CHORUS The flaming ribbons in his hat, They looked so tearing fine, ah, I wanted dreadfully to get To give to my Jemima. CHORUS I see another snarl of men A digging graves they told me, So 'tarnal long, so 'tarnal deep, They 'tended they should hold me. CHORUS It scared me so, I hooked it off, Nor stopped, as I remember, Nor turned about till I got home, Locked up in mother’s chamber. CHORUS Gen. The troopers, too, would gallop up And fire right in our faces; It scared me almost to death To see them run such races. CHORUS But I can’t tell half I see They kept up such a smother; So I took my hat off, made a bow, And scampered home to mother. Yankee Doodle went to town, a-riding on a pony, Stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni. Yankee Doodle-doodle-doo, Yankee Doodle dandy, All the lassies are so smart And sweet as sugar candy. First he bought a porridge pot, Then he bought a ladle, Then he trotted home again As fast as he was able. Marching in and marching out, And marching round the town! Here there comes a regiment With Captain Thomas Brown! «Yankee Doodle» is a tune That comes in mighty handy; The enemy all runs away At «Yankee Doodle Dandy».
