Many Pashtuns are highly conscious of their tribal affiliation, others, mainly those who live in urban centres located outside the Pashtun core areas have lost the social ties to their tribes, although they may still identify with them. Moreover, in Pakistan (as well as in Afghanistan and Northern India) there are a number of communities, who **backtrack** the roots of their ancestors to the traditional Pashtun home land, still use the term Pathan/Pashtun for self-identification, but do not speak Pashto anymore.
