The plant may generate odours when odorous compounds in the wastewater are realised into the atmosphere. These can occur at various locations in the wastewater collection and treatment system, especially where there is turbulence (inlet channel, screens and grit removal, primary sedimentation tanks, aeration basins, sludge handling, etc.). Odour producing compounds are typically generated from anaerobic decomposition of organic matter containing sulphur and nitrogen.
