"CARRIED" is the source of my problems. Does it simply mean, essentially, “managed” or perhaps "serviced," or does it have a more precise meaning in "financialese"?

Sin duda no es un término sencillo. Te adjunto dos definiciones del dicc. de Alcaraz Varó/Hughes, que a mi parecer explican el término de forma correcta.
1) "carry": (BOLSA facilitar fondos a clientes, por parte del corredor, para efectuar transacciones en Bolsa)
2) "carrying broker": (US, BOLSA corredor que presta a los clientes que operan sobre márgenes).
Como puedes ver, no se trata de "gestionar" una cuenta, sino de proporcionar fondos al cliente en concepto de préstamo (en dicha cuenta) para que éste pueda realizar operaciones. Al menos esta es mi interpretación.
