Así es como lo he dicho toda la vida en el laboratorio... quiere decir que dicho porcentaje se refiere a "expresado en peso", normalmente en lugar de volumen.

Creo que no me he explicado bien. \"percent volatile: 95% by weight\" quiere decir que \"esta sustancia puede perder por evaporación el 95% de su PESO inicial\", es decir que despues de la evaporación (volatilización), 100 gramos de la sustancia quedarían reducidos a 5 gramos. Muchos protocolos de laboratorio te dicen, por ejemplo, que combines ácido clorhidrico y sulfúrico en una relación 2:1 EN PESO. Para ello tienes que pesar X gramos de clodhidrico (aunque sea líquido) y añadir la mitad en PESO de sulfúrico (que también es líquido).
\"por peso\" invitaría a hacer la pregunta de ¿por peso de qué? o sugeriría que el porcentaje de evaporación depende del peso inicial, lo cual no es el caso. Una busqueda en google de \"porcentaje por o peso\" da 62 hits y \"porcentaje en peso\" da 694 hits.
Como dije antes \"... by weight\" es una forma corta de decir \"expresado en peso\", \"medido en términos de peso\", etc...
