Hola, traduzco un documento que es una clase para niños de tercer año. Viene una ilustración del cerebro, y entre unas de las frases dice:

The Cerebrum is largest part of the brain.
It is divided into two parts called hemispheres.

Para mí son sinónimos, a no ser que me esté perdiendo algo. ¿Alguna idea?

Explanation:
En realidad, la división a la que se alude en tu original es la del encéfalo (brain), que se compone de cerebro (cerebrum), cerebelo y tronco encefálico.

Creo que la confusión en castellano proviene de la traducción genérica de brain como cerebro. Aquí, claramente, brain alude a encefalo.

Cerebro. Parte más grande del encéfalo, incluye todo lo que está dentro del cráneo menos el cerebelo y tronco del encéfalo.
