English term or phrase: Karelians
In the Pope’s bulla from 9th of December, 1237 Gregory IX appealed to the Swedish archbishop and his bishops with the call to organize a “crusade” in the Finnish lands “against tavasts” and their “close neighbors”. In that way, by calling the crusaders to start destroying “the enemies of the cross”, the Pope meant also Karelians and Russians, together with tavasts. Under the command of grandmaster Hermann von Salza, the Teutons from Livonia, Danish crusaders and Swedish knights set out to the East. That was the only time when three factions – Swedes, Germans and Danes – united.
