En inglés, “character” puede asimilarse a “reputation”, pero en español “carácter” y “reputación” no son sinónimos. Por eso, en este caso mi opinión es que “reputación” es la traducción correcta de “character” (añado referencia explicativa abajo). Con respecto a “antecedents”, recomiendo utilizar “antecedentes penales”, ya que “antecedentes” también puede resultar ambiguo. Es verdad que en un certificado de antecedentes penales emplear “antecedentes” parece suficiente. Pero sin en la traducción se especifica de qué tipo de antecedentes se trata, cualquier posible duda se disipa.

Y no, en español no hay, que yo sepa, ninguna fórmula idéntica a esta, que es característica del derecho indio.

In the process of sentencing the judge must first differentiate between the offender and others with regard to personality, character, socio-cultural background, the motivation of his crime, and his particular potentialities for reform or recidivism.
