Hay dos tipo de revisiones que se realizan en el ámbito de la salud y farmacéutico: narrativa y sistemática. Como aquí no explicas que tipo de revisión se está haciendo, tiendo a pensar que se refiere a la narrativa, pero creo que bien podría ser la sistemática porque también se habla de revisión sistemática de la literatura existente. Si en el texto llega a estar explicada la metodología utilizada, creo que será fácil que sepas cuál es. Te dejo algunas referencias.

Las revisiones narrativas (RN) son un tipo de revisión que se caracteriza por ser de una forma "más o menos exhaustiva"; son realizadas por "expertos en un tema", el/los autor/es no declaran los métodos que utilizaron para obtener, seleccionar la información. Por lo tanto son ideales para poder responder preguntas "básicas" (consideradas estas como las que se refieren a "aspectos" generales de una condición, por ejemplo: ¿qué es la diabetes?, fisiopatología, clasificación o aspectos generales sobre su diagnóstico y rehabilitación). Este tipo de preguntas se puede responder mediante libros y enciclopedias. Las revisiones narrativas, según la jerarquización de la evidencia, se encuentran en el último eslabón de la pirámide (expuestas a la posibilidad de presentar un elevado riesgo de sesgo, principalmente por su subjetividad y nula metodología).

Las revisiones sistemáticas (RS) son una forma de investigación que recopila y proporciona un resumen sobre un tema específico (orientado a responder a una pregunta de investigación); se deben realizar de acuerdo a un diseño preestablecido. En las RS, el centro de estudio no son pacientes sino los estudios clínicos disponibles en los recursos electrónicos (Bases de datos - metabuscadores, literatura gris, actas de congresos, etc.) (2).

Narrative versus systematic literature reviews

Literature reviews can be broadly divided into narrative (descriptive) reviews and systematic reviews[5]. The most important difference between the two categories of reviews is the difference in their level of associated scientific rigour. Narrative literature reviews provide an overview of the literature, typically from the perspective of an ‘expert in the field’[1]. Such reviews often report findings in a format that includes a brief summary of each included study. While such reviews can be informative, particularly when there has been no previous attempt to assimilate the literature in a given area, narrative reviews are often criticised as having a high risk of various types of bias associated with them[6]. Narrative reviews typically rely on subjective and non-systematic methods of selecting and reviewing data. Consequently, authors may intentionally or unintentionally cite only those literature sources that reinforce the author’s preconceived hypotheses or promote their own views on a topic[7].

In contrast to a narrative review, a systematic literature review aims to identify all the available evidence on a topic and appraise the quality of that evidence[4]

Sin más contexto coincido en parte con Judith en que podría referirse a una forma más específica -aunque generalmente creo se alude a una revisión sistemática a falta de especificación.
En todo caso, como dicho, sin más contexto, revisión de la literatura (o revisión de la literatura científica) sobre un tema concreto es el primer paso en cualquier proyecto de investigación.

-> Gracias, Aida. La revisión de literatura (y generalmente la revisión bibliográfica, cuando no es sólo recopilación) alude tanto a la identificación de textos o trabajos relevantes sobre un tema (recopilación) como a su análisis (revisión).

Explanation:
Siguiendo la referencia de Stuart and Aida Nelson, que me parece estupenda, eso se conoce en español como "estado de la cuestión". Seguro. No obstante, he pueto un nivel de confianza medio porque tal vez se trate del émbito de las CCSS, y en farmacia, como es el caso, se utilice otro nombre (ver la respuesta de Judith Armele).
No sé si será una cuestión regional, en España también valdría "revisión de la literatura científica sobre...", pero "estado de la cuestión" es desde luego lo más normal.
