What is rooting in newborns?
The rooting reflex, also known as the search reflex, is a newborn baby's way of trying to attach to the breast for suckling. The steps to the reflex are as follows: The baby's cheek is stroked lightly, usually by the breast of a nursing mother.

Es un reflejo primitivo que presentan los lactantes y que consiste en que al tocarles la mejilla, giran la cabeza hacia ese lado; de esta forma, cuando la madre se dispone a amantar al bebé, al rozarle la cara con el pecho o la ropa, el bebé ya gira la cabeza en ese sentido como si buscase el alimento. En la práctica, aunque es un reflejo natural, muchas veces confunde a las madres (sobre todo primerizas), pues lo instintivo para ellas es empujarle la cabecita al niño hacia el pecho, tocándole la mejilla del lado contrario, con lo que le bebé, al notar el roce en la mejilla contralateral, desvía la cabeza en sentido opuesto al pecho :) También se llama "reflejo de los puntos cardinales", pero este término se usa menos. Es un reflejo que debe estar presente en lactantes y cuya ausencia es patológica; suele explorarse, entre otros, cuando se realiza una exploración neurológica al lactante (ver la 2º ref. abajo, donde aparecen otros reflejos que deben estar presentes en los bebés, para desparecer posteriormente con la edad).
