Extends a distance puede leerse como se extiende a lo largo. No obstante, la expresión extends a distance less than the distance parece pretender sugerir, precisamente, la idea de extenderse a una distancia inferior a (aunque el original resulta algo torcido...).

agree  Neil Ashby: Agree with your suggestion but not with the part about "Extends a distance puede leerse como se extiende a lo largo" - "extends a distance" does not equal "extiende a lo largo" (that would be, extends along/throughout).Patents are almost always torcido;@)
