English term or phrase: BUFFER LAYER
Estoy traduciendo una patente relacionada con un conjunto para retener y asegurar un cable óptico y se dice en un momento dado: "In addition, a buffer layer may cover each optical fiber, the buffer layer may be substantially in contact with the secondary coating ("tight buffer") or it may consist of a small tube of inner diameter somewhat larger than the outer diameter of the secondary coating ("loose buffer")".

- Para "buffer layer" no dabría si poner quizás "capa protectora", pero para "loose and tight buffer" al ir entre paréntesis haciendose referencia a una "coating", no se si podría traducirlo como protector o algo así.

Gracias

buffer layer vs tight buffer vs loose buffer
capa de protección vs protección rígida vs protección semirrígida

Explanation:
¡Hola compañer@!
Con el contexto que tenemos, yo los traduciría así:

buffer layer = capa de protección
tight buffer = protección rígida
loose buffer = protección semirrígida

Examples:
Buffer layer:
This coating protects the fiber from damage but does not contribute to its optical waveguide properties. Individual coated fibers (or fibers formed into ribbons or bundles) then have a tough resin buffer layer or core tube(s) extruded around them to form the cable core.

Loose buffer:
For use in more strenuous environments, a much more robust cable construction is required. In loose-tube construction the fiber is laid helically into semi-rigid tubes, allowing the cable to stretch without stretching the fiber itself.

tight buffer:
Instead of a loose tube, the fiber may be embedded in a heavy polymer jacket, commonly called "tight buffer" construction.

¡Mucha suerte!
