Se juega aquí con el doble sentido de "harbinger". En inglés moderno significa un presagio o precursor. Precisamente, "harbinger of death", presagio de la muerte, es una expresión bastante frecuente. Pero su sentido original, ya obsoleto, era alguien que iba por delante del monarca y su séquito o de las tropas para conseguirle alojamiento: en español, un aposentador (concretamente, un aposentador de camino). Así se utiliza metafóricamente aquí: la enfermedad es como el aposentador que consigue alojamiento para la muerte.
