English term or phrase: Iceberg problem
The tension between knowledge, skills and attitude, in other words, the problem of the integration of theory and practice, has been dominant in Europe over 6000 years or even longer. Examples of rock carvings in Norway and the concepts of Socrates as represented in Plato dialogues, testify to this.

It poses the iceberg problem: can we educate our students in the development of their attitudes, which so much determine their knowledge, skills, and indeed their overall teaching behaviour. The most relevant aspects of teacher education programmes seem, or even appear, to be least “trainable”.
