Pixie dust is dust purported to be passively produced by pixies. It is represented as being magical in quality and can grant certain abilities to those who can obtain and harness its power. It is a term used by doctors to refer disparagingly to herbal medicine dispensed by alternative medicine practitioners & herbalists, i.e. Alternative medicines as opposed to scientifically proven remedies.
The term can also be used in a good sense as in this headline from an English tabloid:-
Magic 'Pixie Dust' made from pig bladders helps 'regrow' limbs of wounded soldiers

In the Disney film, Peter Pan, Tinker Bell is described as a pixie, although, in the J.M. Barrie play on which the film is based, she is actually a fairy. In the Disney versions she always uses "pixie dust", rather than the fairy dust in the play. In Barrie's original play, Tinker Bell is traditionally staged just as a flying point of light beamed from offstage. Disney continues to use the terms "pixie" and "fairy" interchangeably for Tinker Bell, and associated spin-offs.
