This term is used in such property rights where ownership has been enforced strictly by law (not by equity).

This term has its origins in feudal legal system where a feudal was awarded the rights of the land of tenants(which are supposed to have natural rights of the land) by strict law. This system was later challenged during french revolution when concepts of equity and justice became.
