Law/Patents - Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng / biochemistry
English term or phrase: absent
1- when the dashed line (------) of Formula (1) is absent, R2A can be selected from an optionally substituted CI -6 alkyl, .................

2- R6A, R7A and R8A can be independently selected from absent, hydrogen, an optionally substituted C2-24 alkenyl, ...................

I believe that absent in the first section means (missing, not found)

In second section, How can I translate absent? Does it mean an absent compound or element? (An explanation needed)

NOTE: 6A, 7A, 8A, etc are superscript.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Terry, For clarity, I translated absent as "non-existing element or compound" - Do you think this is a good choice?

Asker: Also, I think "nothing" will work.
