English term or phrase: Cultured yogurt
Anybody knows what it is and what it would be called in another language (Italian would be big bonus)?
Also, has anybody heard of a "museum of cultured yogurt"?

This is still the same transcript, but at least now the expression does exist:)

those who can read Italian can have a look at their suggestions:

Needless to say I need something short, so I was kinda hoping that "natural yogurt" would be OK

agree  Rachel Fell: but redundant, as yoghurt is cultured by its very nature, isn't it?\\They seem to mean "live yoghurt", i.e. with more active culture in it

-> Not always. Uncultured yogurt does the same thing but is very hard to find in this era of pasturization. www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/easy_archive/topic/413386-1.html

cultured yogurt
live-cultured yogurt

Explanation:
It's basically yoghurt with active bacteria (the good kind, of course). In Greece, I think it's just called yoghurt with acidophilus, or yoghurt with probiotics. Some people confuse it with Kefir, which is I think fermented a bit differently (I think they add yeast or grains).

So, basically, it's not cultured because it GOES to school, but rather because it IS a school, full of millions of very precocious and very active little bacteria. :P

agree  Ian M-H (X): ... and some so-called 'yoghurt' these days has virtually no active bacteria, so stressing "cultured" isn't quite as redundant as it might seem at first sight

-> Absolutely. :) Here in the US, especially, "yogurt" is or was mostly just coagulated milk. In recent years, "live" yoghurt has sort of been "discovered", and along with it, of course, a grand new marketing campaign. :)

Without actually going into the preparation to make the yoghurt cultured, natural seems best or naturally prepared yoghurt.

In French we call it Bio or organically prepared but that's a bit long in English unless you like the term.

Funny how it sounds like the yoghurt has been to university or the opera house to develop culture!!
