cooking pot

Explanation:
That's what they all look like to me.... According to OED,it's an old term for a water heater. According to other dictionaries it can also be a portable grate or a saucepan....

Note the measurement you have given is US liquid measure; in the UK, this would be 3 1/5 pints only (at 20 fl.oz to the pint).

-> yes, ok, maybe more of a pan, given the heating function. A serving pan, nonetheless.

agree  Melanie Nassar: yes, we used to have one which my mother called a chafing dish, used for keeping food warm at a buffet.

-> Of course you can. http://www.famousfoods.com/cachdi37qt.html / What? So a cooking pot is not a pot, and a serving platter is not a platter? And as far as I know, chafing is NOT a cooking process: http://www.thewalkingsite.com/blisters.html

agree  eccotraduttrice: These are large silver metal serving dishes, they are often deep enough to hold 2 quarts of water, especially when used for very large buffets.

hibachi or fondu pan

Explanation:
My Oxford Dic. don't have this word (though it says this is a name of a beetle, Wow!). But your quote strongly suggests it is not about a beetle (of course). What remind me of your question is a little pan for cooking-on-the-table dishes.
And Japanese has a few cooking-on-the-table stuff, best known is called Sukiyaki. In this all the chef or cook need to do is chop up veges and few thinly sliced meat and some source. The chafer in this case (the source of the heat) is hibachi (electric mostly).
This is similar (in cooking methodwise) to Swiss Cheese Fondu. This is also a cooking on the table type of delicacy. The utencil? Of course a type of chafer.
Also, when you go to a buffe, some foods are kept warm from below. I think this container is a type of chafer too.
