English term or phrase: the spuds were duds
Hi guys, translating Ted-Ed History through the eyes of potato, I came across a phrase "the spuds were duds" (I guess 'spuds' is potatoes and 'duds' is... deadly?). What's the exact meaning of this phrase? Like potatoes were not welcome in Europe? Or anything else is hidden there? Is there any origin behind this phrase? Do you use that colloquially? Thank you!

The full context:
But considering how vital they [potatoes] were
to the Incan people, when Spanish sailors returning from the Andes first brought potatoes to Europe, the spuds were duds.

Most probably, as Sheri suggested, they were of poor quality.

Also, it takes some time for people to become used to new things, especially food. That must have been another reason.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Yes, that's how I translated it. 'Potatoes were not welcome.' But I thought this phrase has some hidden connotations or allusions to something.

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: But in the context it just means it took a while for people to get to like them. Nothing about being bad quality or inferior...

-> I agree. I think that it just takes time for people to get used to new things, esp. food. Thank you, Gallagy

agree  Robert Forstag: Your interpretation in this particular context is correct, and points to the fact that "duds" is in the strictest sense not being used correctly in the cited text (since it incorrectly implies that there was something actually wrong with the potatoes).
