English term or phrase: advanced
"The decision to operate without anyone in the Defensive Midfield position will result in less direct cover for the defence than by using a player in the same role in a more advanced midfield position."

[COMMENT: tactical analysis string for FR 18610 commenting on how well-suited (or not) a player is to his current position and role]

What exactly does "advanced" mean here? Elsewhere in the project it seems to refer to the player taking a more forward position, but in this case it doesn't seem to make sense that playing a midfielder more forward would improve the defense, as opposed to deploying a defensive midfielder. I have to imagine I'm missing something here; I'm not sure what.

forward

Explanation:
It doesn't say it will improve the defence. It says the opposite: the defence will have less direct cover, or protection, if there is no one in the defensive midfield.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Then what does the second part of the sentence mean when it says "...than by using a player in the same role in a more advanced midfield position"?

Asker: The key point in my confusion, by the way, is this: as far as I am aware, the defensive midfielder is the furthest back among midfielders. So I'm not seeing how the lack of a defensive midfielder is being associated with a defensive improvement from having someone in a "more advanced midfield position".

Let's paraphrase the sentence in question:
"Performing with (no) Defensive Midfielder reduces the cover for the defense versus performing with (one) Defensive Midfielder in a more advanced midfield position."

It is clear that the non-presence of a Defensive Midfielder reduces the cover for the defense than his presence, even though in more advanced position.
