As Taña says, we often talk about "off Broadway" in the States, and of course The Fringe is very well established in terms of the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland.

It's where some of the more original, creative, unconventional, ground-breaking material is presented, often by independent producers etc. — and has been a spawning ground for very many talented performers who are now very much appreciated and sought-after in the mainstream.
