English term or phrase: older persuasion
I wanted this journey to prove to him that there was life in the old dog yet. So I'd organized for us to meet a rough-and-ready motorcycle gang for people of an older persuasion here in this place.

Old dog is the old man he is trying to convince and the motorcycle gang is consists from old men.

Older persuasion is for the gang, right?

Thanks in advance,

agree  Tony M: Yes, the use of 'persuasion' is arguably wrong here, since it implies some kind of conviction or belief, whereas being old is simply a fact of life!

-> Actually I disagree, but thanks for agreeing! http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/of-the-persuasion

agree  Jennifer Caisley: Absolutely - it's about who they are, not what they think. It's not massively common nowadays, but you do still hear it sometimes in phrases like "of the female persuasion", i.e. simply a roundabout way of saying someone's female!

-> Yes, it's often humorous. "Of the gay persuasion" is another example.

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: with Jennifer. Still in use sometimes as a jocular way to say no 4= kind/sort/type
