In my view, they are (or pretend to be) drunk in order to get away with mocking people in a way they could not do if they were sober. People "forgive" them because they are (supposedly) drunk and don't know (or mean) what they are saying. Look how often people will say "Sorry for what I said last night — I was drunk!" But of course, sometimes the drink lowers their inhibitions (or they can pretend it has!) so they may say things that they are actually thinking, but wouldn't dare say. You know that old expression "in vino veritas"? Latin, loosely translated as "people tend to say what the really think when they're drunk". Of course, in the 'mocking' part, one might also read the idea that other people present might secretly agree with them! Drunk man to lady: "You're far too fat to wear a short, tight skirt like that!" Everyone else in room: [embarrassed realization that they were thinking the same] |
