portion Explanation: The DNA strand, when inactive, is folded and packed with proteins (i.e. histones). In this situation, the DNA strand is not available for expression of genes (it is "silenced"). Sirtuin regulate detachment of such proteins from a large portion (patch) of DNA, allowing unwinding of the DNA strand and making it available for translation of large groups of genes contained in that patch. .
