English translation: at the same time

English language (monolingual) [PRO]
Law/Patents - Law (general)
English term or phrase: concurrent with each other
The document I am translating is a verdict in the matter of making indecent photos.

Sentence: suspended sentence - prison or YOC ( Young Offenders Centre?). Defendant to be imprisoned for 9 months concurrent with each other. The said sentence to be suspended for 2 years.

What does "concurrent with each other" mean and refer to in this context?

Thank you in advance.

Selected answer:at the same time
Explanation:
For your phrase to make sense, there has to be another sentence somewhere in the context, possibbly for an associated offence, and the two sentences run at the same time, rather than consecutively.

What is missing is a phrase such as "for each count", e.g. "Defendant to be imprisoned for 9 months (for each count) concurrent with each other." Maybe the number of counts is stated elsewhere in the document?

Notes to answerer
Asker: That's the entire text: Sentence: suspended sentence - prison or YOC ( Young Offenders Centre?). Defendant to be imprisoned for 9 months concurrent with each other. The said sentence to be suspended for 2 years. The sentence suspended was a custodial sentence imposed under the provisions of the Criminal Justice Order 1996.

agree  Tina Vonhof (X): I would leave out 'with each other' and say 'concurrently' but that still doesn't explain what 'each other' refers to.

the opposite of consecutive; i.e. served in parallel

Explanation:
consecutive sentence: each conviction, the time to be served for each one starts after the previous one is concluded.

concurrent sentence: the time to be served for each conviction starts at the beginning and they are served in parallel.

concurrent sentence
