ØãÓ Explanation: The sense I am getting is that these gouges are used to make the hardware flush with the wood surface, most probably by pushing them neatly in. |

coves and trimming Explanation: Gouges are types of 'digging out' tools, like chisels or machine tools with curved blade ends - see gouge and to gouge in the English dictionary. Coves and trimmings are types of moulding shapes in wood or other materials. See these definitions of gouge below: a chisel for cutting rounded holes in wood. www.pilgrimhall.org/tools.htm A tool with a sharp, concave edge for shaping wood, stone or metal. www.mda.org.uk/archobj/archobjg.htm A groove or cavity in the flooring surface accompanied by material removal and penetration below the immediate flooring surface. www.armstrong.com/commflooringna/glossary.html -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs 36 mins (2005-10-10 09:14:38 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- If your reading is correct, then the meaning is simply tidying off, which does not necessarily mean making something flush, but rather to remove any irregularities left by a coarse cut or machining process. If you think this means making it flush menas making it even - then you ar correct, but bear in mind the shape may be a groove or a raised beading. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs 39 mins (2005-10-10 09:17:35 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- That should read - If you think making it flush means making it even or smooth - ... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs 48 mins (2005-10-10 09:27:27 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I still think the phrase "Gouges are used for gouging out coves and trimming in hardware" means "coves and trimming in hardware are made or done using a gouge" I also wonder whether hardware should be hardwood, although special gouges can be used for stone and metal. Hardware is so often associated with ICT, perhaps it should be replaced by hard materials, so that the phrase could be rephrased as: "Gouges are used with hard materials for gouging out coves and performing trimming." |
