English term or phrase: rut hitting
A worker describes how he got injured on the job:

I tried to pick up the handle and to open up the couplers from one side. But I couldn't open the coupler that was connected to the locomotive. I turned my back around and went to the other one to open up that one. That's when I heard that ****noise of the rut hitting****. That's why I turned around and it was real quick, my hand got coupled up.

What does he mean by the "rut"? If you know the full technical term in English, please provide it so I can look it up in a bilingual dictionary. Thanks!

Asker: Hi Natalia. Thanks for your help! I've changed the KOG entry because my question was English monolingual, not English to Russian.
