I am assuming that this is simply a technical term, or is it only used in US English (and not in the UK)?
It comes in a list of things to assess when rating the patient's hostility:

agree  Michael Barnett: In every day English, assault can take on a metaphorical character and can describe anything from a bad smell to a punch in the face. In this context, and in medicine in general, it means only a physical attack.
