I have difficulty understanding this. Help, please!

Context:
Most of the physical or mental exertions, infections, and other stressors, which act upon us during a limited period, produce changes corresponding only to the first and second stages: at first they may upset and alarm us, but then we adapt to them.
Normally, in the course of our lives, we go through these first two stages many, many times.
Otherwise we could never become adapted to all the activities and demands which are man’s lot.

Reference information:
I was going to suggest "luck" but then I reasoned that "fate/luck/lot" have a lot to do with our own choices. A drug addict who complains about being homeless chose to be in that predicament. However, someone who suffers a genetic disorder did not choose his ailment. Therefore, I agree with Charles's description of "Unavoidable elements of the human condition." It's befitting.
