English term

global period

English Medical Medical (general)
Hi guys, I need some help with this.
Context:

Surgery: Surgical procedures are billed separately by doctors and the hospital. The doctor’s charge for the surgery includes the cost for any follow up treatment or visits within 90 days of the procedure, also known as the ‘global period’.
However hospitals must bill each date of service separately as there is no ‘global period.’

From the asker:
I understand: A global period is a period of time starting with a surgical procedure and ending some period of time after the procedure.
I'm looking for a close synonym, so I can translate into my mother tongue.

Is "total treatment time" a good answer?
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Yvonne Gallagher

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Found online What is meant by global period in medical billing?
A global period is a period of time starting with a surgical procedure and ending some period of time after the procedure. Many surgeries have a follow-up period during which charges for normal post-operative care are bundled into the global surgery fee.
Yvonne Gallagher May 27, 2017:
yes, it's quite simply the total or overall follow-up time/period (of 90 days for the doctor) following the surgery which is included in the doctor's fee. However, it's pointed out that HERE the hospital charges for each service separately. This "service" might be spelled out elsewhere in your document but it's likely to vary from hospital to hospital so you can't assume it is the same as in the link you've posted. Just to add, "total treatment time" is not correct as the patient is not necessarily receiving any treatment in their follow-up visits after surgery. More likely just check-ups. so "surgery and follow-up period=a total period of 90 days" is really all you need to translate

Check this out:
https://www.cms.gov/Outreach-and-Education/Medicare-Learning...

10-Day Post-operative Period, (other minor
procedures).
• No pre-operative period
• Visit on day of the procedure is generally not
payable as a separate service
• Total global period is 11 days. Count the day
of the surgery and 10 days following the day of
the surgery.
90-day Post-operative Period, (major procedures)
• One day pre-operative included
• Day of the procedure is generally not payable as
a separate service
• Total global period is 92 days. Count 1 day before
the day of the surgery, the day of surgery, and the
90 days immediately following the day of surgery
Nam Vo (asker) May 26, 2017:
Thanks, philgoddard. Oh, I thought that the term implies 2 periods of time: surgery time + follow-up time. I need to check again. Thanks :)

total time

It's explained in the text as the 90-day period after surgery, which is not necessarily the same as the treatment period.
